If you are searching for a new PC Desktop Computer for your home office, there are some important features you need to keep in mind when you decide to purchase a new computer for your Freelance writing business.
The latest PC computers have the Vista operating system installed and you should select Home Premium edition – Service Pack 1. The Home Basic edition does not provide enough features to fully support a Freelance writer.
PC Computer Features
For most computer operations today you need to have at least a 250 GB hard drive, although more will not hurt.
This is necessary for all the programs, for example MS Office 2007, use a large amount of hard drive space.
You should select at least 1 GB of RAM so any installed program will run at optimum speed.
A slow computer will drive you nuts in the long run. Anyone who has tried to use MS Office 2007 with less RAM can attest to how slow the program runs with less than 1 GB of RAM. I personally have 4 GB of RAM. I like things to happen now, when I am switching between programs and websites.
When you are shopping for a PC computer select the “show more details” tab in the Vista Welcome Center and look for a performance level of 3.5 or greater, avoid if lower. If you do not know how, ask the salesperson to show you.
Specific Hardware PC Computer Requirements
Other key features to have in PC desktops for basic use include:
-
Intel or AMD processor of at least 1 GB speed (mine is 2.4 GB)
-
Monitor that is 17 to 19 inches for optimum viewing (I have a 22 inch LCD Monitor)
-
2 external speakers
-
Multimedia preferred for Freelance work
-
External hard drive for back up of all work
-
DVD/CD reader and writer
-
Laser printer for use in a home office (more economical in the long run).
